Niche Marketing

We have all heard or read from experts on how important it is to develop a niche in the marketplace for your product or service.

I am driving along Parramatta Rd & have just noticed a small mechanical workshop business with a very clever niche.

The sign out the front simply read – “specialising in Rolls Royce service & repair” – and sure enough parked in the driveway with the bonnet up, was a rolls royce!

Which has me thinking – it is not only important to target a specific niche in the marketplace – it is also important to target a lucrative niche.

How well would this mechanical shop go if they specialised in repairing Datsun 180B’s?

This post has been created on an iPhone whilst sitting in a car – modern technology just blows me a away!

Stop Trying to Be The Best @ What You Do!

.

A number of Small Business Owners continually put in a huge amount of effort trying to be the best at what they do!

They strive to provide the best product or ensure that the service that they provide is second to none!

They focus so much on this one endeavour that they fail to get better at the other important processes of their business.

Let me remind you – the delivering of the product or service, is only one aspect of running a successful business!

So I would like you to ponder two rhetorical questions!

  1. Do you get the best burgers from McDonalds?
  2. Do you get the best service from a Bunnings Store?

The answer to these two questions for most people,  in most cases would be an unequivocal NO!

Now I am not suggesting that you take your product or service to the other extreme – of being bad or poor – what I am trying to emphasise is simply this – it doesn’t have to be the best or close to perfect!

What Can Small Business Learn from McDonalds and Bunnings?

You don’t have to be the best provider of the service or product in your industry – you simply have to be a better marketer of your service or product.

The success of your business does not hinge on you giving the best service or even having the best product in the world – it is hinged on how well you can market the ‘the thing that you do‘.

So Stop Trying to Be The Best @ What You Do & Get good at Marketing Your Business!

Stop for 5 Minutes

It is not often that I stop for 5 minutes during a busy and hectic work day – to watch a video.

But this music video – of ‘ Stand by Me ‘, caught my attention, so I started to watch it thinking that I will watch 30 seconds or so and move on – in a minute or two ( I am a very busy man)!

Just as it was finishing (yes I watched it right to the end) a work colleague walked past – asking what was I watching?

I briefly told him and invited him over to watch it, warning him it goes for 5 minutes. Stating that he didn’t have 5 minutes to spare – he said he will have a quick look.

He too, was there till the end of the clip!

What is so engrossing about the clip – was not the song – we have all heard the song ‘ Stand by Me ‘ before.

What is so engrossing about the clip was the fact that buskers across the world performed it.

For me, I am reminded of the bigger picture, the picture I often forget and neglect when I have my head down and ass up, working day in and day out, being the boss, carrying the burdens and trying to make my business a success!

In our own domains (business and at home) – we are the Kings BUT our domain/your domain is a speck on the face of humanity.

If you are not a SME Business owner – you probably would not relate to this blog post.

To the SME Business owner – never lose sight of the Big Picture – whatever that Big Picture might be for you!

Enjoy the Video – Stop for 5 Minutes !

Mission Complete

.

Over the last 3 Thursday Nights – Lynda and I have been conducting Online Marketing Classes for a locally produced program called YEMP – Young Entrepreneurs Mentoring Program. The subject we were teaching our YEMP students for 3 hours per night – was Online Marketing.

The course was intense and jammed pack full of technical information and we had 10 days to create it!

Our challenge was not only to make it interesting – but relevant to the SME Business Owners (YEMP Students) in the room. Our other challenge was time!

If anybody has gone to an Internet presentation and stayed awake until the end – you will know that the information being presented – although very important – can be slightly on the dull side. Couple that with the fact that the presenters are usually ‘internet techies’ who speak a language similar to Klingon (of Star Trek fame).

Well – being as humble as I can be – Lynda and I created and presented a course on Internet Marketing, that was not only relevant and applicable to SME Business but also Entertaining and Educational.

I thank all the students who attended – and to those who gave glowing feedback on how we have helped with their business.

Don’t you love when a plan comes together and a tough mission gets completed.
